Getting to Know the Town of Madisonville

Madisonville, LA Water ViewMadisonville was originally founded in 1800 under a different name, Coquille (also known as Cokie). The name translates to "shell" in French and reflects the abundance of shells that can be found along its riverfront. The town's founder, Jean Baptiste Baham, found the name apt for one of the Northshore's most important ports. It was renamed 10 years after its founding in honor of the President at the time, James Madison.

In 1837, the Madisonville Lighthouse was constructed, which still stands today. Registered with the National Register of Historic Places, the lighthouse beckons travelers from the Tchefuncte River, Lake Pontchartrain, and beyond. The success of the port, which supplied bricks and other goods to communities along the Tchefuncte River, gained notice among more than just settlers. During the Civil War, military strategists took hold of New Orleans and its more prosperous ports, including Madisonville.

Madisonville is also the site of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum, which hosts the annual wooden boat festival in the fall. Many gather to celebrate the unique maritime history of Louisiana, engaging in contests, parades, crafts, and live musical performances. The tradition began in 1990 as a way to bring together the surrounding communities' wooden boat enthusiasts. Now, hundreds of boats line the waterfront and more than 30,000 visitors flock to the festivities. The Wooden Boat Festival is just one of the many ways that Madisonville celebrates its historic and cultural roots in innovative new ways.

The town is also known for its stunning architecture, which reflects a unique blend of Spanish and French influences. Many of the estates date back through the 1800s and feature ornate Victorian elements that simply cannot be replicated. These more subtle intricacies shed light on the rich complexities of the town's history, adding yet another element to this family-oriented waterfront settlement.
